The purpose of Alianza is to strengthen the people of Oaxaca through model projects that reflect the root needs of these margianalized people across a selected spectrum of solutions: tutoring of illiterate children toward entry into public schools, health education and care for mothers and families, and the marketing of traditional crafts.
The indigenous people of Oaxaca are the most vulnerable members of the population. Nearly half of the state's 3 and 1/2 million persons belong to the 16 ethnic Oaxacan tribes. In spite of five centuries of Spanish speaking dominance the tribal dialects persist.. The subsistence farmers on once fertile valleys and terraced hills, now decimated by rapacious land use practices, are the least able to adapt to the ways of a changing world.
It is our belief that small steps on amelioration are often a sure route to important solutions.
